The lowest quote I got by far was from Liberty Painting out of VA - $300 for the room for two coats. It's an 11x14 foot room with 8 ft ceilings with two closet doors and two windows. When I moved a couple years ago, I got quotes for painting just the bedroom of my apartment. If you want to try it as a bonding experience it will probably take you about a week. The TL DR of all of this is that if you want this done super professionally it will probably be much more money than you think. The last was much lower but the drama I went through and also wondering if the dude had just run off with my money was not worth it. Two of those quotes were basically $5000, which I was not willing to pay for a rental.
I wanted them to do a thorough job and figured the money I paid would be in lieu of whatever break I could give my own deranged cereal-eating, no-taping, hardly sleeping self. When I got my place painted I got quotes from 3 places.
Do NOT cheap out on either paint or brushes. You hold the handle and use the edge to create a barrier and then use a high quality brush to edge in. I tried to google this thing but didn't hit on the right terms to find a pic, but my local Ace has a very cheap thing that's just a plastic edge with a handle. I learned my psychotic painting ways because my parents let me do whatever with my childhood bedroom because it was the 90s and no one cared what their latchkey kids were doing, up to and including buying harsh chemical strippers from the hardware store and taking down wallpaper they thought was very cool when they were 8. If you don't think that you'll wake up at 6am and put on your painter clothes to get started, eat nothing but cereal for all three meals, and work until you're too tired to work and fall asleep with paint in your hair I'd say 2 people can do this in a week. Some of that is drying time, which you can't change. The repaints I did myself were as one person and it took me a week of steady work where, in the end, I should have taken like a week and a half off work at least for both psychotic painting and recovery from same. Two times I did it myself and the last time I hired someone to do it. I've painted or had it painted 3 times now. I have a 550ish square foot 1BR apt (old building, dimensions never entered into it because the layout is good and I'm 2 blocks from a Metro station).
